The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) – a measure of the quality of higher education in the UK – has affirmed the Institute of Dentistry, QMUL, as the leading dental school for research in the UK.
QMUL dental research was returned within Unit of Assessment 3 of the REF (a submission including Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) and was awarded an overall quality score, expressed as a Grade Point Average, of 3.34 (out of 4) which placed QMUL 1st for dental research quality in the UK.
Other performance highlights include:
• 92% of research outputs were scored either world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*), with the percentage of outputs ranked 4* topping the subject tables.
• Research Environment was judged to be conducive to producing research of world-leading quality in terms of vitality and sustainability, scoring 100% 4*.
• The assessment of research impact found that our approach was conducive to delivering future impacts of outstanding reach and significance, with 100% of our Impact case studies scored 3*/4*.
Commenting on these excellent results, the Dean for Dentistry, Professor Michael Curtis, said: “We are tremendously honoured by such an outstanding outcome for our School in this rigorous nation wide assessment of dental research quality. The results have re-affirmed our status as one of the leading insitutions for basic science and translational research in the UK. We take particular pride in the recognition that the environment for research in our School is viewed as the best in the UK. This is absolutely key to our ambition to develop the next generation of internationally leading dental research academics in this country."
