BDS students Kieran Gohel-Andrews and Rebekah Hadley nominated as chairmen for the Griffin Community Trust
31 July 2014

Dental students, Kieran Gohel-Andrews and Rebekah Hadley have been voted in as the new student chairs of The Griffin Community Trust. Their being nominated for the role is an extra-special achievement as they are the first Dental students to be student chairs in the Trust’s 25 year history.

The Trust provides a befriending scheme where 23 medical and dental students from Barts and The London SMD give their time to visit the elderly residents at Shaftsbury Lodge in Poplar. They also organise fortnightly social events with the residents. Events range from ready-steady-cook events or bingo nights to the annual afternoon tea at the Dorchester Hotel. As student chairs Kieran and Rebekah will be responsible for running the student committee and organising the volunteering at Shaftsbury Lodge. By providing social support for the residents the trust aims to reduce loneliness and isolation. This unique project bridges the generation gap and combines the traditions of the East End, old and new. As part of the befriending scheme, each resident is given a dedicated student to visit them each week to form solid friendships that both parties can learn from.

In return for their time and efforts the students involved are offered accommodation at Griffin House where they enjoy subsidised rent. Traditionally Griffin House has had lots of dental student involvement but always needs more. Hence, all students are welcome to join the volunteers at Toynbee Hall Wellbeing Centre on Wednesday afternoons where there are games/craft-sessions each week that are run by the Griffin Students.
