Oral Medicine is a specialty of dentistry related to the management of the soft tissue diseases of the mouth. The practice of oral medicine involves the diagnosis and non-surgical management of medical conditions that manifest in the head and neck region. Oral Medicine is a unit within the Centre of Clinical and Diagnostic Oral Sciences and has responsibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training of juniors on the Specialty Training Programme and the provision of a specialist clinical service.
The clinics in the department are Consultant-led, attracting referrals from primary, secondary and tertiary care. In addition to the general oral medicine clinics, there are specialist multidisciplinary clinics for Behcet's Disease, Sjogren's syndrome and vesiculobullous conditions.
The Oral Medicine staff deliver lecture programme and clinical supervision and teaching to undergraduate students on the BDS programme. The department offer postgraduate studies including Master in Clinical Dentistry in Oral Medicine programme as part of the. Taught postgraduate courses as well as research PhD Opportunities. The department is a recognised unit for providing higher specialist training in Oral Medicine
